Bijagua is located in one of the most diverse areas of Costa Rica. Because of the varied habitats, we have some fantastic birding spots in the area that provide unique species that can be difficult to see in other parts of the country.
Below are some of our favorite spots in and around Bijagua.
You can't go birding in Bijagua and not visit Tapir Valley. This 200-acre private nature reserve is one of the best birding spots in Costa Rica. Because of the varied habitats we find here, we always find lots of species during our tours.
Heliconias is primary rainforest habitat, and one of the best places in Costa Rica to see the species that inhabit this environment.
This is a private reserve at the base of Tenorio, and provides some incredible birding habitat. At the top of the Continental Divide, we see a mix of Guanacaste and Caribbean species here.
This gorgeous series of waterfalls is just a few minutes away from Bijagua, and while the view of the river and falls is fantastic, there are some interesting species of birds to be found here.
Starting at Heliconias, the Laguna Danta trail is a steep climb up to the lower caldera of Volcan Tenorio. At the top of the hike, you'll find yourself in cloud forest habitat.
Just 1½ hours from Bijagua, Caño Negro is the largest wetland habitat in Costa Rica at 25,000 acres. This Caribbean lowland forest, river, and lagoon are home to hundreds of wetland species that congregate here during the dry season.
Bijagua lies directly on the Continental Divide, so the weather and geography are very diverse. When it's cold and wet on the Caribbean side of the region, you can drive twenty minutes away behind the rain shadow and find sunny, dry forest habitat.
The diversity of species and hotspots all within a small area makes Bijagua a fantastic birding destination. If you have questions about birding in Bijagua, contact us here!
