Toucans of Northern Costa Rica

Toucans are a popular species with all birders. These large, colorful birds are charismatic and fun to watch. Of the six species of toucan in Costa Rica, you can find five of these within a few minutes of the town of Bijagua.

If you want to get nice views or photographs of toucans or aracaris, Bijagua Wildlife Tours can plan the perfect excursion for you or your group.

Keel-billed Toucan

These are a bit less common than the Yellow-throated Toucan, but we see these every day around town and at Tapir Valley.

Yellow-throated Toucan

This is the most common toucan throughout Costa Rica and around Bijagua. They're loud birds that forage on the native local trees in the area.

Collared Aracari

These are also common around the town of Bijagua and we see them daily at Tapir Valley. These birds typically travel in groups of six or seven.

Yellow-eared Toucanet

This is the most elusive toucan in Costa Rica. They like middle-elevation, pristine forests, so they have limited untouched habitat in most areas. We see these birds throughout the year in Bijagua.

Yellow-eared Toucanet

Northern Emerald Toucanet

These birds are found at higher elevations in Costa Rica, usually above 800 meters, so we don't see these as often as the other toucans. The Laguna Danta trail is a great place to see these birds, though, as it's cloud forest habitat.
